How are we to understand some scriptures that say we have eternal life now (Romans 6:23, 1 John 5:11, 13) and other scriptures that seem to say we must persevere to receive it (Jude 21, 1 Timothy 6:12, Romans 2:7)?  Is there a difference?  Is the crown of life in James and Revelations referring to eternal life also?

The question that you are asking has to do with a theological subject called “eternal security”. The question is: if someone is saved, are they always saved? There are quite a few verses in the Bible that can be quoted on either side of this issue. However, we should remind ourselves of a few things that are true in thinking about this subject. First, we are not saved by our works; therefore, we cannot lose our salvation on the basis of works. But, if we are able to lose our salvation, it would have to be based on giving up our belief and turning our back on Jesus. Someone that believes in eternal security might also say that if someone comes to Christ and then walks away, then they never really had salvation to begin with. I have never heard of someone saying that just because they believe in eternal security that they can go out and live a sinful life because their salvation is eternally secure.  I think only you can be sure about your eternal security!
 
I hope to have explained both of these views well. I have personally found that they are very similar when it comes to the practicalities of carrying our faith. We should neither walk in the constant fear of losing our salvation or the sinful-pride of not being able to lose our salvation. Rather, we should walk in the fullness of God and live our lives in such a way to represent God and receive the crown of Glory that is talked about in Revelations and James.
